چکیده

We present a high-order spectral element method for solving layered media scattering problems featuring an operator that transparently enforces the far-field boundary condition. The incorporation of this Dirichlet-to-Neumann (DtN) map into the spectral element framework is a novel aspect of this work, and the resulting method can accommodate plane-wave radiation of arbitrary angle of incidence. In order to achieve this, the governing Helmholtz equations subject to quasi-periodic boundary conditions are rewritten in terms of periodic unknowns. We construct a spectral element operator to approximate the DtN map, thus ensuring nonreflecting outgoing waves on the artificial boundaries introduced to truncate the computational domain. We present an explicit formula that accurately computes the Fourier data involved in the DtN map on the spectral element discretization space. Our solutions are represented by the tensor product basis of one-dimensional Legendre-Lagrange interpolation polynomials based on the Gauss-Lobatto-Legendre grids. We study the scattered field in singly and doubly layered media with smooth and nonsmooth interfaces. We consider rectangular, triangular, and sawtooth interfaces that are accurately represented by the body-fitted quadrilateral elements. We use GMRES iteration to solve the resulting linear system, and we validate our results by demonstrating spectral convergence in comparison with exact solutions and the results of an alternative computational method.

Axisymmetric Scaled Boundary Finite Element Formulation for Wave Propagation in Unbounded Layered Media

Wave propagation in unbounded layered media with a new formulation of Axisymmetric Scaled Boundary Finite Element Method (AXI-SBFEM) is derived. Dividing the general three-dimensional unbounded domain into a number of independent two-dimensional ones, the problem could be solved by a significant reduction in required storage and computational time. The equations of the corresponding Axisymmetri...

An efficient and stable spectral method for electromagnetic scattering from a layered periodic structure

The scattering of acoustic and electromagnetic waves by periodic structures plays an important role in a wide range of problems of scientific and technological interest. This contribution focuses upon the stable and high–order numerical simulation of the interaction of time–harmonic electromagnetic waves incident upon a periodic doubly layered dielectric media with sharp, irregular interface. Spectral and Condition Number Estimates of the Acoustic Single-Layer Operator for Low-Frequency Multiple Scattering. Part II: Dense Media∗

The aim of this paper is to derive spectral and condition number estimates of the singlelayer operator for low-frequency multiple scattering problems. This work extends the analysis initiated in [6] to dense media. Estimates are obtained first in the case of circular cylinders by Fourier analysis and are next formally adapted to disks, ellipses and rectangles in the framework of boundary elemen...

An Adaptive Finite Element Pml Method for the Elastic Wave Scattering Problem in Periodic Structures

ABSTRACT. An adaptive finite element method is presented for the elastic scattering of a time-harmonic plane wave by a periodic and rigid surface. First, the unbounded physical domain is truncated into a bounded computational domain by introducing the perfectly matched layer (PML) technique. The well-posedness and exponential convergence of the solution are established for the truncated PML pro...

A spectral element method calculation of extraordinary light transmission through periodic subwavelength slits

A spectral element method together with a surface integral equation as the radiation boundary condition is used to simulate the scattering properties of periodic subwavelength slits. The surface integral equation utilizes the periodic Green’s function in the wave number space and is solved by the method of moments, while the interior inhomogeneous medium is modeled by the spectral element metho...
